I bought the physical book from the bookstore and began reading that evening. I originally read this book when it was published in 2012. Whether it is this same book or another, surely you have a favorite that grabs you each time you open to the first page. I cannot possibly be the only who feels this way. It doesn’t matter that I know the story, it still feels good. And you don’t know why- they just do! That’s how I feel about Julianne Donaldson’s Edenbrooke. And even though you have countless other newer pairs of shoes, this one still fits the best. It’s like an old pair of tennis shoes, comfortable and familiar and you know exactly what to expect. What it is about this book that draws me in every time I pick it up? I’ve read it at least a dozen times and yet, I find myself coming back to it again and again.

We started with the two most dramatic statistics, the number of people infected and the number of deaths caused by the virus. Pandemic NumbersĪs the COVID-19 pandemic has continued, we’ve seen an evolution of how data is presented. Huff’s book is that in order to discern facts, we need to question the data presented, understand the perspective of the presenter, and find corroboration for the conclusions. Most of us are not statisticians, so trying to understand the real story can sometimes feel very complex. This book resonates with me so much this year as we are confronted with data on the pandemic, polls forecasting the election and volatile stock market performance. So, to understand the story well, you need to delve deeper than the numbers presented. The purpose of this read was to inform us that you can tell any story you want with statistics. Our professor had us read a book by Darrel Huff titled, “How To Lie With Statistics.” Amazingly, still available, if you’re interested. Gladwell begins with the real story of what happened between the giant and the shepherd boy those many years ago. In David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell challenges how we think about obstacles and disadvantages, offering a new interpretation of what it means to be discriminated against, or cope with a disability, or lose a parent, or attend a mediocre school, or suffer from any number of other apparent setbacks. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the bestselling author of The Bomber Mafia. Ron Hubbard’s religious technology, yet even as she ensured that the mission (she called it a “Center,” choosing, with purpose, a less religiously charged word) adhered to his policies, she was never dictatorial. She wore simple, elegant clothes, black and tan and linen. As head of a Scientology mission-the “mission holder”-she would refer to them often. Of course Jessica kept these books close to hand. Another bookcase held the equally large set of “admin” volumes, bound in green, which contained everything Hubbard had ever written about how to found and run an organization. A bookcase behind Jessica’s desk held the entire set, bound in red leather, with an inch-and-a-half gap where this one had been removed. Ron Hubbard had written regarding auditing, Scientology’s form of counseling. It was one of a dozen volumes that contained, in chronological order, all the policy letters and bulletins that L. On her desk lay a large red book embossed with gold letters. Her lovely face revealing nothing about the purpose or mood of our meeting, Jessica ushered me into her office and closed the door. |
